Review: 'Frosted Cowboy' by Charlene Ross (2016)

Laney Delaney was living the dream. She had a fabulous fiancé and a career as a couture wedding dress designer. But after catching her (turns out, not-so-fabulous) fiancé cheating and being accused of upstaging one of her brides at a wedding, Laney finds herself with no boyfriend, no job and no plan.

After some serious soul searching, Laney is determined to start over. She embarks on a design career that takes her from a Rodeo Drive boutique to a flea market stall, but it’s worth it—even if it means she has to suck up to her childhood nemesis for help.

At the same time, three very different men vie for her attention: a masseuse/screenwriter with an unfortunate reputation, a stable fireman who just doesn’t spark a romantic flame, and the fireman’s ridiculously hot co-worker whose illicit under-the-mistletoe kiss still burns Laney’s lips.

Professionally and romantically, Laney is on the verge of reinventing her life and finding her true passion—but can she learn to trust again and believe in herself?

Today I have a review of a quite recent new release to share with all of you, namely Charlene Ross' 'Frosted Cowboy'! The book was released on February 8th by Velvet Morning Press and I got the chance to read and review it after I was contacted by the author herself. I have to admit the title of the novel, 'Frosted Cowboy', had me a bit puzzled and I honestly had no idea what to expect of the story inside. Luckily, the book description managed to pull me in the right direction and I looked forward to sitting down with this, hopefully fun, chick lit read!

With a snap of her fingers, thirty-two-year-old Laney Delaney suddenly seems to have lost her almost perfect life. She catches her fiance cheating on her and loses her job as a couture wedding dress designer, forcing her to start over again, both on a professional and a romantic level. Luckily, Laney has an idea to start her own business and things are off to a promising start, but can she keep this going? And when it comes to the other sex, Laney also can't complain. With three different guys fighting for her attention, she has the luxury of picking the one she wants. But it doesn't take long for Laney to realise that that's not just a luxury, but is also actually the question she needs to ask herself: what does she really want?

I had no concrete idea of what to expect of 'Frosted Cowboy' before I picked it up, but it turned out to be a fun and light chick lit read. The book focuses on main character Laney Delaney who has suddenly lost both her job and fiancé, and is forced to start over. While the storyline of the book is a basic one often seen within the chick lit genre (the heroine loses it all and has to start over, figuring things out along the way), author Charlene Ross definitely tried to give it her own twist. There's a main focus on Laney's love life (with three different men vying for her attention), with also a secondary storyline that focuses on her work/job. While the basis for a good novel is definitely there, I just couldn't help but feel there was something missing.

I would have liked it if the novel had been a bit more fast-paced and had focused some more on all the main and secondary characters, because I didn't really feel like I got to know any of them that well. I did like Laney, but it didn’t feel like she really changed much throughout the novel even though she had to deal with a pretty big change in her life all of a sudden. I also thought the ending of the story was a bit sudden and it didn’t feel completely resolved to me. Overall, I did enjoy ‘Frosted Cowboy’; it’s a fun and light read and I’m sure other chick lit fans out there will really enjoy it, but I personally just wasn’t blown away by it.
Rating:7/10
